Whangarei has changed dramatically in the past 10 years, and it will change further over the next 10 years.
Whangarei Momentum is Council’s vision for the development of the inner city over the next 15-20 years. It outlines a range of projects; some of which have been completed, or are in our current Long Term Plan and some are still in the planning stages and will need further investigation, consideration and consultation.
Whangarei Momentum builds on visions presented in the 1996 20/20 Traffic Management and Central Area Study, followed by 20/20: + living the vision (20/20 Plus), which was developed in 2006.
The 1996 study had a strong focus on infrastructure projects such as a new bridge over the Hatea, changes to the Dent Street road configuration, construction of the five finger round about on Walton Street and the Colonial building at the Town Basin. As the Mill/Nixon street improvements progress over the next two years, many of the projects in the 1996 plan are now complete.
20/20 Plus, focused on improving the Town Basin environment and included projects such as the Canopy Bridge, Heritage Trail, Art Park, Walton Street Boulevard improvement and improved walk/Cycleways.
As many of these projects have been completed, Council continues to look forward and to understand and identify the needs of our population through into the next decade and beyond.
The vision of Whangarei Momentum is guided by other plans and strategies such as our 2015-2025 Long Term Plan and the Sustainable Futures 30/50 Growth Strategy. It also takes into account plans to reclaim and reconnect with our green space and waterways – through the Blue/Green strategy, initiatives like Vibrant City which look to bring life into the area at the weekend and after hours and plans that will enable further development like the Hihiaua Precinct Plan.
This public consultation opened on 9 October 2015 – and will remain open until 25 December 2015, unless otherwise noted.
